Learning from Mstislav Rostropovich...

...and following his example.

Wednesday evening I read the latest issue of Strings magazine. A tribute article to the late Mstislav Rostropovich highlighted his more-than-full musical career and his inspiring life. Among the brilliant moments I was reminded of from Slava (as many have come to affectionately call him) was his spontaneous solo recital at the site of the crumbling Berlin wall in 1989. What a statement of faith and good will to pull out the cello on the spot and use his music in support of freedom!

Later that evening I attended a recital by a close friend and colleague, violist Sheridan Randolph (www.SheridanRandolph.com coming soon!), at Steinway Hall in New York. It was a program of large works - every one of which was a bear. Everything was played from memory, everything with passion, every phrase expressing a deep resonance with the performer. I felt his commitment to the music. Among the audience members were a number of non-musicians, influential in the community. I commended him later for filling seats - by personal invitation! - with folks who would otherwise not be exposed to what we do. They witnessed a vital performance - evidence that classical music is alive and kicking!

That night I saw the connection. When we use our music to benefit others, they learn from the example of our actions and passions - so use your music well!
